The fire struck late afternoon May14, ignited by lightning
somewhere adjacent to our wooded back lot. The fire spread quickly through
the back acres; while firefighters contained the fire on our side of a
30-ft.-deep wooded border, a strong northwesterly wind blew the fire past the
house and to some 30 acres total.

views. Within an hour, a full blaze. By the house, full of smoke. |
 |
| Hours later: smoky ruins; blackened trunks; dead leaves
on pines signifies the death of the trees. |
|
| Next day: a closer look at the ruins, including the blackened back lot. |
 |
| Several days later: the immediate back woodlot, where firefighting vehicle and its path ruined the slough. |

| Three weeks later: three views of another portion of the burned area: life begins anew, but not for the pines. |
